Our history

In the year 1869, the Rev. P. Bjork was sent by the Methodist Conference to the neighborhood, then known as Long Creek, in  Oakwood Township, South of Millville. In the fall of 1872 the decision was made to build a Church. On June 14, 1874, the completed church was dedicated.
The membership grew rapidly those first years. In 1880 The Norwegian Danish Conference was formed, and this church became a part of it along with others in the state where the Scandinavian languages were used.

After 1901 the church ceased to have regular worship services, except with preceding elders or visiting preachers. In 1908 regular Sunday school classes started again with the leadership of CalebOlin. In 1909 services once again started with Rev. Jonas Jacobson as pastor.

It was during the 1930's & 40's that the church saw it's greatest growth, due in part to the natural growth of the church families, and also to a revival among the young people which influenced the life of the church and sent several young men and women into full-time Christian service.

In 1944, the Methodist Episcopal Church became the Methodist Church, and the Millville Church became The Oakwood Methodist. The merger had a long-term impact on the congregation. The Methodist Church asserted it's right of ownership of the building, it's contents, and the cemetery.

In the year 1950 it became necessary to move the church building due to construction of the highway. The building was moved back 50 feet over a new full basement and an addition was built on the front. Many other remodeling projects also took place.

Official church membership in 1954 was 40. The size and location did not qualify the church for a Methodist Pastor; therefore the ministers from 1951-1959 were from the Wesleyan Methodist Church in South Troy. The church was later joined to the Plainview Methodist parish until it was formally closed in 1966. The Methodist Church does not allow a building it owns to be used by another
denomination; this among other problems left the church without regular services from 1966-1976.

In 1974, the Minnesota Conference of The United Methodist Church voted to turnover the building title to the Oakwood Cemetery Association. The little white church on the hill began a new era in the fall of 1975, when it was decided to once again hold regular Sunday evening services there. Being organized as an independent unaffiliated congregation has allowed freedom and decision-making as well as challenges, as there is no larger body to lend support in times of transition.

Another addition and modern amenities were added in 1980. A basement addition with plumbing and a fully functional kitchen were included. In 1984 the upper portion of the addition was complete
